World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), observed on 21 March every year, is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. Why March 21st? The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month (3.21) was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.
“Persons with disabilities, including those with Down syndrome, are more than persons in need of assistance; they are agents of change who can drive progress across society – and their voices must be heard as we strive to reach the Sustainable Development Goals.” Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, United Nations
About Down Syndrome: Down Syndrome (DS), also called Trisomy 21, is a condition in which a person is born with an extra chromosome. Chromosomes contain hundreds, or even thousands, of genes. Genes carry the information that determines your traits (features or characteristics passed on to you from your parents). With Down Syndrome, the extra chromosome causes delays in the way a child develops, mentally and physically. The physical features and medical problems associated with Down syndrome can vary widely from child to child. While some children with DS need a lot of medical attention, others lead healthy lives. Though Down syndrome can’t be prevented, it can be detected before a child is born. The health problems that may go along with DS can be treated, and many resources are available to help kids and their families who are living with the condition. “My Community … A City for Everyone” aims at turning Dubai into a disability-friendly city by the year 2020 through projects and initiatives that promote the participation and inclusion of persons with disabilities in the community, eliminating all obstacles that may stand in the way of them positively engaging in their environments, as capable individuals of society. Part of this initiative is Inclusive Education: the goal is for persons with disabilities to have access to inclusive education with specialized support services available in mainstream schools. Dubai aims to appropriately integrate persons with disabilities, particularly children, in inclusive education programs, provide specific, affordable specialist services facilitating inclusion and transition from home/center to school, and empower the role of communities, families, persons (and children) with disabilities to participate in education, recreation, arts, sports and culture.
